Pomegranates

Pomegranate fruit, opened.Image via WikipediaEverybody who knows me knows that I've always loved pomegranates. They're trendy right now with the pomegranate martini, Pom and all the anti-oxidant drinks you can think of, and of course there's Grenadine, but I love them for their shape and saturated color.

Every fall I buy some for my holiday decor. The neighbor at our mountain house in Turkey has one in her yard and I've always wanted to have one.  Even the mini fruits add to my floral displays.

The pomegranate has tons of meanings too. (Right up my alley, hey!)
  • Memory of good
  • Fertility -  because of all the seeds. Greek orthodox followers use them at celebrations for good luck.
  • Actual apple from Eden - yes the one Eve gave Adam. (Take that, Edward Cullen.)
  • Associated with the Greek goddess Hera and the Hindu earth goddess Bhoomidevi
  • Jewish symbol of righteousness
The pomegranate also appears in heraldic art in many countries, perhaps most famously in Granada, Spain. In Turkey, it is especially associated with the city of Side. Ancient coins from the town embossed with pomegranates have linked the city to the story of Orion and that myth goes even further back to Isis and Osiris. The list goes on and on... We could be here all day, but I got distracted by the Pom commercial :D

Pomegranates are trendy? That would explain why my sister explained in her snooty voice that she uses pomegranate redux in her latest recipe. Personally I just like to eat them over the sink and let the juices drip down my chin.

you know I have never eaten a pomegranate? But ew, must start buying POM immediately! If only to keep them in biz so they can keep making commercials--Reow! :D

I love poms except that you can't get the red juice on your clothes or else it stains.

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and leaving a wonderful comment.

I've never tried one. Now I've got an urge to buy one at the store. :)
Thanks for visiting my blog, and following. Have a great weekend!

FABULOUS! I'd be tempted to force feed my hubby one of the pomegranates we have upstairs if he weren't being such a butthead at the moment!

I always associate the pomegranate with Persephone and the seasons. I LOVE though, that it is the 'apple' (makes a lot more sense, based on where the bible was written)

no kidding you've got distracted! I can barely write my comment after that mirage!! ...anyway... I love pomegranates as well - my father in law used to eat them with cinnamon, they go great with salad or as garnish for a tangy touch over stuffed green chiles with creamy walnut sauce.

Normally, I’d draw parallels between Persephone’s six arils and Adam’s apple. A case of whose fault was it…the man or the woman? (Goddess Culture redux!)
